Pull on your mittens and beanies folks, the Alpine Winter Festival is heading to the Bay this year just in time to celebrate all things ice and snow! Returning bigger and better than ever, the Village which saw former homes in Victoria Square and the Adelaide Riverbank will offer a super chill line up of arts, food, music and skating in its alpine wonderland at Glenelg this winter.

Yes that’s right, it’s a new era for Adelaide’s original Alpine Winter Village, with the brand-new Alpine Winter Festival that promises to breathe new life into South Australia’s winter by the coast.

Wintery playground on the foreshore

The festival will see Moseley Square and Glenelg’s Foreshore transform into a wintery playground with the 24-day Alpine Winter Festival from 25 June – 18 July featuring a culturally themed winter hub of immersive art, food, markets, music, ice skating and a spectacular light and soundscape that will light up the iconic Glenelg Jetty.

Making its Glenelg debut, Alpine Winter Festival, presented by Momentarily and City of Holdfast Bay will excite South Australians with a loosely themed Christmas atmosphere, with family fun by day, which kicks into warmth and good times well into the night.

Come out of hibernation at the Alpine Winter Festival

The festival has been curated to bring Adelaide out of hibernation during what is traditionally known as the quietest time the year.

“We are excited to announce this new era for Alpine Winter Festival. After the success of Mad March, we wanted to continue South Australia’s reputation as the festival state, not the sleepy state during winter,” says Momentarily Creative Director Stuart Duckworth.

“Coming to Glenelg is a brilliant opportunity to activate Adelaide’s west. We are working in partnership with City of Holdfast Bay and Jetty Road Glenelg to create memories and opportunities for the entire precinct,” Stuart explains.

City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson said the festival was a welcome new addition to the precincts winter event calendar.

“We are really excited to welcome the Alpine Winter Festival to Glenelg and encourage people to stay and play in our backyard by the sea,” Mayor Wilson said.

“Glenelg is beautiful at any time of the year, but to see Moseley Square and the foreshore come alive with Christmas lights, market stalls and fire pits will be quite the spectacle. With the STORM light-show that will bring the jetty to life, Glenelg will truly be the place to be this winter.”

STORM light and sound activation

The focal point of the 2021 festival is STORM, a light and soundscape that will encapsulate the Glenelg Jetty. Inspired by the sounds, movement and impact of a storm at sea the activation will partner with local creatives Harsh Realities.

Glenelg will be the home of Christmas in July with decorative Christmas lights throughout Moseley Square and the Alpine Winter Village. Fire pits and sculptures will bring much needed warmth as the festival takes over South Australia’s winter nights.
