Family Friendly New Year’s Eve Events in Adelaide 2020
It’s been a heck of a year, friends, and I think all of us are probably fairly keen to see the back of 2020!
Many of the usual New Year’s Eve events held in Adelaide that are family friendly with fireworks and fanfare sadly won’t be held this year because of a little thing called COVID19, but that’s not to say we can’t all still have a good time on New Year’s Eve 2020! We’ve got more reason than ever to wave adios to the year gone by!
The word of 2020 (aside from ‘unprecedented’) is PIVOT and that’s what we have to do this New Year’s Eve, think outside the square and do something a little different.
To help get you started we have a few ideas for family friendly things you can do on New Year’s Eve in Adelaide!
Things to do with kids on New Year’s Eve 2020 in Adelaide

Finish the year off on a high! Adelaide Oval RoofClimb is that once-in-a-lifetime experience and it runs all day New Year’s Eve.

TreeClimb is one of our fave places to take fun to new heights in Adelaide, and New Year’s Eve just got a whole lot better, with TreeClimb hosting a FREE event with live music playing from the roof of the TreeClimb EcoHut.
Pack your picnic rugs and get ready for a relaxing day in the Adelaide City Parklands.

The Mix 102.3 Big Wheel at the Bay
The Mix 102.3 Giant Wheel has returned to Moseley Square for the summer and is has been offering rides since November. Why not take the family down to the bay on New Year’s Eve, and take a spin in the evening before ringing in the new year and farewelling 2020 on the beach!
The hugely popular attraction stands 35 metres high, seats up to 144 people in 24 gondolas, and is the tallest portable wheel in Australia.
The Giant Wheel is set up in Moseley Square near the jetty and open daily from 10am to 9.30pm.
Tickets cost $10 per person or $30 per gondola.

The Mix 102.3 Giant Wheel will be spinning until 8 March 2021.
Murray Bridge Family New Year’s Eve Event
Murray Bridge New Year’s Eve event is one of the only places you’ll see official fireworks in Adelaide to celebrate New Year’s Eve this year.
The event will be held from 5pm to 10pm with the culmination being the fireworks display that is launched from the iconic Bridge at 9:45pm.
There’ll be a series of activities for children that includes giant hamster balls, laser tag, a rock climbing wall, glitter tattoos, inflatable water slide and a bubble entertainer.
The stage will feature the best of local Murray Bridge musicians including Cabaret Collective, Chasing Lights. Hannah Smith and Noel and Karen Kneebone
Because of COVID restrictions this event will be fenced and ticketed but totally FREE.

Take a Paddle on Captain Jolley’s Paddle Boats
Explore the Torrens River on a pedal powered boat this New Year’s Eve, you’ll be in the perfect position to take in the local scenery while enjoying the sunshine and festive spirit of the riverbank, all from your own private perch.
Paddle boats run until 7pm so book an evening cruise and pack a picnic to share on the riverbank! Or try your luck at securing a last minute booking at the Malt Shovel Taphouse and let someone else make dinner on New Year’s Eve.
The Semaphore Waterslide Complex is located on the Esplanade at Semaphore between the Semaphore Jetty and The Palais Hotel, and is surrounded by large grassed and paved public areas and bikeways.
With the close proximity to Semaphore Beach and the Semaphore Road shopping precinct this is a great place to kick off your New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Hit the Beach
Heading to the Beach on New Year’s Eve (or New Year’s Day for that matter) is an Aussie institution and while there won’t be any formal celebrations or fireworks in 2020, that’s not to say you can’t picnic on one Adelaide’s glorious beaches with your family and see in the New Year.

Yankalilla Display and Float Trail
Yankalilla Council is hosting a 2020 New Year’s Eve Display, just like a pageant but it doesn’t move and the spectators can drive or walk past!
Residents are encouraged to show their New Years Eve spirit and be part of their float or display, as they would normally do in the pageant. Dress up, have a party with family and friends and get carried away (in a covid-safe way of course!).

Start your NYE afternoon at The Beachouse
Packed with Australian-first and world class attractions, The Beachouse is the perfect destination for a fun-filled day out and guess what, there’s no entry fee!
Open from 9am – 5pm on Thursday 31 December, you can spend the day on New Year’s Eve with enough games and rides to entertain the whole family, because it’s more fun at their house!
Start at The Beachouse on New Year’s Eve and finish up with a ride on The Big Wheel and a picnic on beautiful Glenelg beach with your family!

We all know Adelaide has an absolute wealth of playgrounds to choose from, whether that be in the suburbs or by the sea, plenty of which have BBQ facilities, and expansive room for lazy picnicking on the grass.
So pick a playground, pack a picnic and settle in for New Year’s Eve celebrations with your family. Choose a playground with a BBQ and take some snags… we can’t think of a better way to ring in the New Year 20/21 in Adelaide than surrounding yourselves with the people you love and the smell of onions cooking.
