It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Adelaide, and yep, the decorations are going up in Woolworths and the giant tree has arrived in Vic Square, so the festive season has officially started.

In terms of family Christmas activities to do in Adelaide with the kids, there’s a jolly good selection to choose from this year with Christmas events and festive things to do around Adelaide having a revival since the 2020 that was! Many events are going ahead as normal and those that aren’t, are changing up their usual proceedings in order to make it possible to have more socially distanced Christmas festivities.

Santa's Wonderland 2021

Santa’s Wonderland

Adelaide’s biggest Christmas event, Santa’s Wonderland, is back for another magical year, with the festive family spectacular running from 3 December – 24 December in Jubilee Pavilion at the Adelaide Showgrounds.

It’s a Christmas celebration like no other, with more fun family activities than there are elves in Santa’s workshop, and so many magical memories waiting to be made. Think toboggan slides, ice skating, Christmas stage shows, selfies with Santa, roaming Christmas characters and the family favourite festive activity trail. Not to mention the all important three hours of unlimited rides!

Christmas in Rundle Mall

Silver bells, silver bells… it’s Christmas time in Rundle Mall! That’s right, South Australia’s biggest retail destination has had the full festive makeover with Rundle Mall unveiling its Christmas window display to bring cheer to shoppers young and old.

Ten activations will stretch across the length of Rundle Mall bringing joy, wonder and a desire to explore the Mall. Eight traditional Christmas windows are on display featuring local artists and presenting varied takes on the festive season, while the Paolo Sebastian dress exhibition, which launched at October’s Vogue Festival earlier this year, will evolve into a curated themed display.

Brewery Christmas Lights Display

The Brewery Christmas Riverbank Lights Display is a GO! We repeat, a GO! And it’s lucky because is it really Christmas in Adelaide without them? We think not!

The 2021 Christmas Lights Display along the riverbank at the Brewery will have a shortened duration this year due to COVID restrictions, open from Monday 13 December until Christmas Day inclusive.

To ensure patrons’ health and safety, guests will need to pre-book their free tickets for one of the four available 60-minute time slots each night of the display. There will be 500 free tickets available for each hour-long time slot, with a total of 2,000 tickets available per night.

Carols by Candlelight Adelaide 2021

Carols by Candlelight is South Australia’s largest Christmas concert and a long-standing tradition, and last year celebrated its 75th year of spreading Christmas cheer!

Christmas Kids Club at Barossa Valley Chocolate Company

Take the kids to the Barossa for a Christmas Kids Club, hosted across a range of days in December by our friends at the Barossa Fun Factory. Take part in  a range of Christmas themed interactive activities for children aged 5-14 (younger children welcome with an accompanying adult). The Magic Cave at David Jones

Father Christmas will be returning to DJ’s this year in Rundle Mall, with the iconic Magic Cave set to take up its usual residence on the second floor of David Jones.

From December 2 until Christmas Eve, your fam can visit Santa in a COVID safe environment at the Magic Cave, entry is free but photo bookings must be made online ahead of your visit.

Santaland at Myer

Santaland at Myer Adelaide is a magical, winter wonderland and the highlight of Christmas for young and old alike. Your adventure starts aboard the Santaland Express, as the life-size train takes shoppers of all ages on a virtual journey from Myer Central Station non-stop to Santaland.

A trip to Santaland isn’t complete without a visit to the Claus’ Residence for photos and a chat with Santa himself. And don’t forget to post your letter to Santa in the special mailbox and we’ll make sure it’s delivered to him.

Santaland is going to be the busiest place this Christmas and bookings are essential this year.

Giant Christmas Tree Victoria Square

Soaring 25 metres into the sky, Adelaide’s Giant Christmas Tree is back this year in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga. With 13,616 individually programmable LED lights, the Giant Christmas Tree is transformed into a dazzling light display each night of the city’s Christmas festival.

Lighting information:

  • From 17 November 2021 to 4 January 2022
  • Lighting takes place from 8:30pm to 2:30am
  • Light display loop lasts 10 minutes

The fountains will be on for the kids to splash in on a hot summer’s night under the Christmas lights.

Xanadu Drive in


The Xanadu Drive-In is an Australian-first movie experience, set to be hosted at the Torrens Parade Grounds on December 18 and 19. The Xanadu Drive-in is set to run as part of the 2022 Adelaide Fringe but given there is nothing better than a Christmas movie in December; The Xanadu Drive-In will be hosting two very Christmas themed screenings of 2 iconic Christmas films.

December 18 will see the family favourite Christmas classic The Nightmare Before Christmas followed by a “Oogie Boogie’s Bonanza Late Night Xmas Party” with DJ and continued festivities.

December 19 will see the holiday classic to define all holiday classics, It’s A Wonderful Life, followed by a “George Bailey’s Bellringer Bash Late Night Xmas Party”.

Along with a nostalgic screen and cabaret experience, the Xanadu Drive-In will offer your Drive-In attending favourites, as you indulge in in great food and drink from a selection of premiere South Australian suppliers, including popcorn and choc-tops, along with market stalls, bars from The Speakeasy Hotel vintage caravans, and roving performances.

What better way to finish the year than an exciting interactive Christmas concert for young people aged 1–7, parents, grandparents, and friends?

A wonderful mix of orchestral music and festive songs, conducted by Minas Berberyan with some very special guests. Adelaide Youth Sinfonia is one of five orchestras under the umbrella of Adelaide Youth Orchestras, and is a training orchestra of emerging young musicians aged 10 – 18 years. Adelaide Youth Orchestras is proud to be celebrating 20 years providing world class development programs and career pathways for South Australia’s brightest young musicians.

Twilight Christmas Fair

Celebrate the start of the festive season with an afternoon of free family fun and entertainment! The City of Onkaparinga is hosting a Christmas Fair on Sunday 5 December at Bice Oval, Christies Beach from 3pm – 7pm.

This is a FREE community event and will have Christmas themed entertainment, children’s activities, music and a visit from Santa.
